Having established that my Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint tipo 101.02 chassis number 350886 is part of a last planned #350xxx batch of 975 cars (including 161 Sprint Veloce cars), I can begin to plan what kind of engine options I have.
This cross-section shows the 00102 Giulietta Normale engine with the deep but slim oil-pan and centrally mounted oil pickup.
The first Giuliettas had the early 1315 engines with smaller main bearings, slimmer valve stems and the fuel pump fitted to the front of the head. But come 1962 the engine had its final 00102 specification, and all the ancillaries were placed as it was later seen on the 105-series engines. The Giulietta engine uses a dynamo for electrical power supply, the clutch is manually operated and the gearbox is only 4-speed, with fourth going right through at 1:1.
The 00506 Giulia 1300 engine is a direct development of the 00102 Giulietta engine but has the wide oil-sump from the 105-series cars.
This means that the engine and transmission is similar to the tipo 105.06 Giulia 1300 that was produced from 1964 to 1971. The 00506 engine from that model obviously has an alternator and the bigger oil-sump of the 105 cars, but apart from that they seem to be only uprated in "certain internal details".
My car has a 00526 engine. This is the 1600cc engine fitted to tipo 105.26 Giulia Supers which were produced like that from 1965 to 1972. The serial number is 0052628783, meaning hat it must have left Arese in april-may 1967. It is fitted with a dynamo and has the manually operated clutch - but a 5-speed gearbox!
A 00526 engine from a Giulia Super; like the one sitting in my car; but mine has the slim oil-pan; the intake ducting and plenum have been removed.
FIA App K allows me to "re-make" my car as one of the 161 Sprint Veloces of the period. This means that I will need to find a proper 00106 Veloce engine, or find a 00102 Normale engine and fit it with webers ... or I can find a 00506 engine, swap the oil-pan over and fit the dynamo.
A complete package of 00106 Giulietta Veloce engine with mechanically operated clutch, the 4-speed gearbox, double 40mm Weber carburettors and the oil-sump, which is actually slightly wider and differently shaped than the Normale.
I will definitely have to find a 4-speed gearbox, but I can keep the clutch.
It's going to be an exciting puzzle! This weekend I hope to pick up the car and visit Steffen Madsen, my mechanic. A chat about options and bastards is overdue.
Decisions, decisions ... :-)
