I don't know how big is your budget, but if you want to tune the engine in stages you can invest on the block build and save the head tuning for later... The block is more difficult and expensive to take apart again...

But if you need a torquey engine you might not need high compression pistons, if you raise the compression to much you might end up with an engine that needs long duration cams to get good power. And that means it will need lots of revs, aka, a screamer engine... :P

Alfa rods are usually quite good but the might buckle with high compression and high revs... But most of the tuned engines I've seen in Portugal (2 liter mainly) use stock Alfa rods...

If you want to save some money on this first phase of the engine tune try this: use the 2 liter (or 1750) cams. I have seen some good results with this modification on stock 1300cc engines... ;)
